Clean-up Sock Burning

  • 11 Apr 2026
  • 8:00 AM - 10:00 PM

Ahoy members-

Sock burning at a yacht club is a lighthearted tradition that marks the unofficial start of boating season, typically held around the spring equinox. Our sock burning will occur on April 11,2026 After a long winter of maintenance, cold weather, and time off the water, members gather to ceremonially toss their winter socks into a fire—symbolizing a return to warmer days, bare feet on deck, and life back on the water. It’s less about the socks themselves and more about shaking off the chill of winter and embracing the camaraderie and excitement of a new season.

Beyond the symbolism, sock burning is also a social highlight for many clubs. It brings together members, families, and guests for an evening of food, laughter, and shared anticipation of the months ahead. Stories of past voyages are exchanged, plans are made for upcoming cruises, and new members are welcomed into the fold. The tradition reinforces the spirit of the club—community, tradition, and a shared love of boating—while providing a fun and memorable way to kick off the season.

Please take a moment to add this to your ODBC calendar and join members at the club for a really fun night .

Enjoy a barbeque buffet, cash bar, DJ and sock burning celebration. April 11, 6PM. $16 per person at the door and free to all Club Clean-up volunteers.

"When the snow melts below your ankles it’s time to burn your socks!"
